The Proof 1 oz South Korea Gold Tiger Medal was first released by KOMSCO in 2016. Because of its success and popularity, the mint decided to launch an Uncirculated version of this medal annually. The medals all contain .9999 fine gold and are minted in the following denominations: 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz.

Unlike other bullion coins like the Chinese Gold Panda or the Perth Mint Kangaroo, the Korean Gold Medal has a limited annual mintage - thus increasing its numismatic value.

Although the design slightly varies from year to year, a depiction of a tiger is always present on the medal’s obverse. A representation of the Korean peninsula in Hangul,  the writing system of the Korean language, always graces the reverse.

About the Korean Tiger

The tiger is widely respected across numerous cultures and religions, and it is honored on coins, medals, and rounds all over the world, including Korea.

The tiger holds great meaning in Korean history, culture, and society. Not only does it appear in the Korean foundation mythology and folklore, but the tiger is also a popular subject of Korean paintings and sculptures. The tiger is believed to be a guardian that drives away evil spirits, and is respected as a sacred creature that brings good luck – it is a symbol of courage and power. This belief is similar to that held by the Chinese people, and the tiger is honored as the third animal in the Chinese Zodiac Cycle.
