Sovereigns date back centuries, the first being issued under King Henry VII in 1489. These Sovereigns most commonly feature King George V, grandson of Queen Victoria on the obverse. This coin might also feature an engraving of the legendary of St. George on the reverse. According to the legend, he liberated a kingdom from the evil control of a dragon that demanded a sacrificial virgin every year. St George rescued the Swedish princess by defeating the tyrannical dragon on horseback. This design captures the scene of St George on horseback, defeating the evil dragon with sword in hand, but the reverse might instead feature the shield design. This shield design features the British crown and shield motif framed by a heraldic wreath.

The obverse features a bust portrait of the reigning monarch at the time of minting the coin.

Most dates for the reverse feature St. George mounted on horseback slaying a dragon, a design by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. However, some coins from Queen Victoria's reign feature a crowned shield.
