Prussia was a prominent German state known as the “Duchy of Prussia” which originated in 1525. Following the Second Northern War, it was officially declared the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701. In the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War, the German Empire was formed, and the King of Prussia, Wilhelm I was crowned “German Emperor”. From that point on, all subsequent Kings of Prussia also served as the German Emperor. Prussia adopted the German gold mark (officially known just as the "mark") as its currency in 1873. Each ruling monarch was featured on these gold marks.

The featured monarchs include:

  • Wilhelm I (1871-1873)
  • Wilhelm I (1874-1888)
  • Friedrich III (1888)
  • Wilhelm II (1888-1889)
  • Wilhelm II (1890-1913)
  • Wilhelm II (1913-1915)

The coin’s obverse displays the portrait of the reigning monarch facing right, surrounded by inscriptions that include the monarch’s name and title.

The reverse depicts the Crowned imperial eagle, the year of mintage, and the denomination.
