The Gold Panda coin series began in 1982, followed by the Silver Panda coins in 1983. Originally marketed as a 1/4 oz Gold Panda coin, this 8g hit shelves in 2016. This 8g version is heavier than its predecessor at 1/4 oz, which comparably weighs just under 8g. Additionally, the diameter of the coin is larger. It grew from 21.95 mm to a complete 22 mm. This change was made in order to line up the Gold Panda coin program with China’s metric system. Also, the Gold Panda coin series is one of the longest-running modern gold coin programs in the world. On top of that, now it is the first bullion coin series to be marked in grams instead of troy ounces.
The obverse features the Hall of Prayers in the Temple of Heaven every year. This side displays the kanji for the People’s Republic of China (中华人民共和国) along with the year of mintage.
The reverse displays a design based on the national animal of China, the panda. This illustration changes annually, sometimes featuring a parent and its cub or just one panda. Inscriptions include weight, purity, and denomination.
