Both Gold and Silver Panda coins are equally famous. The gold coins are made of 24 Karat fine gold and were first introduced in 1982. They were introduced in four different sizes; 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. in 1983 a new size was introduced, the 1/20 oz. After a few years in the early 1990’s, 5 oz and 12 oz coins were introduced.

These coins have different denominations too. From 1982-2000; the denominations given to different sizes were 100 for 1 oz, 50 for ½ oz, 25 for ¼ oz, 10 for 1/10 oz, and 5 for 1/20 oz. Since 2001, the denominations assigned are different. For 1 oz it is 500 Yuan, ½ oz is 200 Yuan, ¼ oz 100 Yuan, 1/10 oz 50 Yuan, and 1/20 oz is 20 Yuan.

The Chinese gold coins are produced at four different mints which are the Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Shenzhen Mint. They are legal tender bullion coins authorized by the State Council of People’s Republic of China and is issued by the People’s Bank of China.

The coin changes its design annually on the reverse side of the coin bearing a different portrait of the Giant Panda each year. The designs for the reverse were created by China Mint Company from 1982-1986. From 1987 onward, it was taken over by China Gold Coin Incorporation.
