US Mint Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

A memorable set of coins by the US Mint is now available. This coin series celebrates the moon landing 50 years ago. To celebrate this occasion, American Artists competed in a design competition. The public law 114-282 states the coin's reverse is to be “...a representation of a close-up of the famous ‘Buzz Aldrin on the moon’ photograph…” So, sculptor Joseph Menna design was picked. Additionally, this side features an engraving by sculptor Phoebe Hemphill. She says that she “...over-emphasized the curvature (of the coin) to create the illusion of the curved visor (on Aldrin)...”

Additionally, the obverse features the artwork of Gary Cooper. Cooper is a designer who won the competition for this side.  He decided to showcase Aldrin’s footprint on the moon’s surface.

The Apollo program has made generations of young people seek out careers in science, engineering, mathematics, and technology.

This coin series has four different coin options. The first is a $5 gold coin. The second is a $1 silver coin. They are both curved. Another is a half-dollar clad coin. Finally, the last is another curved 5 oz $1 proof silver coin. All of these coins feature the same design on both sides.

The obverse of these magnificent coins features phases of the moon. The phases circle the words “GEMINI,”  “MERCURY,” and “APOLLO.” Inside this circle, you’ll see the footprint on the lunar surface. They celebrate the amazing dedication and work of the U.S. Space program, and what they did to get the first man on the moon.

The reverse showcases the famous photograph of Buzz Aldrin on the moon. A small piece of his helmet and visor appear as it overlooks astronaut Neil Armstrong, the lunar landing, and the United States flag. You’ll also find the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the denomination.
