US Mint Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

The U.S. Mint Apollo 11 Commemorative Coin Series, released in 2019, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. This series includes various coin options, each featuring a distinctive curved design that mirrors the shape of an astronaut’s helmet. The obverse, designed by artist Gary Cooper, depicts a close-up of the iconic footprint left on the lunar surface, accompanied by the inscriptions “MERCURY,” “GEMINI,” and “APOLLO,” representing the missions that led to the moon landing. The reverse, designed by U.S. Mint Medallic artist Phebe Hemphill, captures an image of the lunar module, the American flag, and the Earth in the background, as reflected in the visor of Buzz Aldrin’s helmet, symbolizing the historic moment when humanity first set foot on the moon.

THE APOLLO COIN OPTIONS

The Apollo 11 Commemorative Coin Series includes a variety of options, such as a $5 gold coin, a silver dollar, a half-dollar clad coin, and a 5-ounce proof silver dollar, each struck with the highest quality by the U.S. Mint. These coins not only commemorate a monumental achievement in human history but also showcase the artistry and precision of the mint, making them a cherished keepsake for collectors and space enthusiasts alike.

This coin series has four different coin options. The first is a $5 gold coin. The second is a $1 silver coin. They are both curved. Another is a half-dollar clad coin. Finally, the last is another curved 5 oz $1 proof silver coin. All of these coins feature the same design on both sides.
