WHAT IS A MINOTAUR?

In Greek mythology, the Minotaur was a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man. It was said to be born from the unnatural union of Pasiphae, the wife of King Minos of Crete, and a white bull. Since the Minotaur had no natural source of nourishment he began to devour humans for sustenance. Following the advice of a famous oracle, King Minos had the skilled architect and inventor Daedalus design and build a gigantic Labyrinth (complicated maze) to hold the Minotaur prisoner at the center. The monster was eventually slain by the hero Theseus with the help of King Minos's daughter, Ariadne, who gave him a ball of thread to help him navigate the Labyrinth and a sword to kill the beast. The Minotaur has become a popular figure in art, literature, and popular culture, representing a symbol of primal power and ferocity.
