The word “minotaur” comes from the Ancient Greek Μῑνώταυρος, translated as "Bull of Minos". In the legend, Greek god Posiedon punished Cretan king Minos for going back on his word to sacrifice a beautiful white bull. For his insubordination, Poseidon caused Minos’s wife, Pasiphaë, to fall in love with the bull. As a result of this pairing, Pasiphaë gave birth to the minotaur - a half man, half bull hybrid. Since the Minotaur had no natural source of nourishment he began to devour humans for sustenance. Following the advice of a famous oracle, King Minos had skilled architect and inventor Daedalus design and build a gigantic Labyrinth (complicated maze) to hold the Minotaur prisoner at the center. The reverse of the coin showcases a mechanized version of the legendary minotaur, holding a skull in his right hand. A background of gears adds to the mechanical aesthetic.
