US MINT | 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING

US MINT PROGRAM

Is it any surprise the US Mint would release these amazing coins to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing? Before the design of these coins, public law stated the design was to be “…a representation of a close-up of the famous ‘Buzz Aldrin on the moon’ photograph…” Then, artists around America took part in the design competition. The winner was an engraving by sculptor Joseph Menna and sculpting by Phoebe Hemphill. She states that she “…over-emphasized the curvature (of the coin) to create the illusion of the curved visor (on Aldrin)…”

Additionally, the obverse showcases artwork by designer Gary Cooper. Gary Cooper won the competition for this side with Aldrin’s footprint on the moon’s surface. In addition to the moon landing, the Apollo program has inspired generations into careers of technology, engineering, mathematics, and science.

COIN SERIES

This series showcases four different versions of the coin. First, a curved $5 gold coin. Second, a curved $1 silver coin. Third,  a half-dollar clad coin. Lastly, a curved 5 oz $1 silver proof coin. These coins all have the same design on the obverse and reverse sides.

The obverse of these coins shows phases of the moon surrounding “MERCURY,” “GEMINI” and “APOLLO.” Inside the circle is the footprint on the lunar surface. The reverse represents the photo of Buzz Aldrin on the moon. It shows a small bit of his helmet and visor as it looks over astronaut Neil Armstrong, the lunar landing, and the United States flag. You’ll also find inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the denomination.
