The American Gold Eagle Series

The American Gold Eagle series has been a cornerstone of the U.S. Mint's gold bullion program since its inception in 1986. Authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, the Gold Eagle is struck from 22 karat gold, making it one of the most popular and trusted gold coins for both collectors and investors. These coins are available in three types: Brilliant Uncirculated, Proof, and Burnished versions, each offering unique appeal.

In 2006, to mark the 20th anniversary of the American Gold Eagle series, the Burnished Gold Eagle was introduced. This special edition featured a matte-like finish, providing collectors with a distinct variation that set it apart from the bullion and proof versions. The burnished finish has since become a standout choice for collectors, adding a new level of craftsmanship to this iconic coin series.

Design of the Burnished Gold Eagle

The Burnished Gold Eagle shares the same classic design elements found in the Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions. On the obverse, Lady Liberty strides forward confidently, holding a torch of enlightenment in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Her flowing hair and the billowing gown capture the essence of freedom and grace. The design, originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the 1907 Double Eagle, is surrounded by inscriptions such as “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the year of mintage.

On the reverse, two distinct designs are featured depending on the year of issue:

  • Type 1 (1986-2021): Created by Miley Tucker-Frost (Busiek), this reverse features a soaring American Bald Eagle clutching an olive branch as it approaches its nesting family, symbolizing strength and unity.
  • Type 2 (2021-present): Introduced in 2021, the new reverse displays a close-up profile of a Bald Eagle, designed by U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Jennie Norris. This updated design brings a fresh perspective to America’s national bird, emphasizing its majesty and power.

The Unique Appeal of Burnished Gold Eagles

What sets the Burnished American Gold Eagle apart from the Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions is its distinct burnished finish. Struck on specially polished blanks (planchets), the Burnished Gold Eagle features a smooth, satin-like appearance that enhances the fine details of the coin’s design. This matte finish provides a unique visual appeal, making the coin stand out in any collection. Additionally, Burnished Gold Eagles are marked with a “W” mint mark, indicating they were produced at the West Point Mint.

Burnished Gold Eagles are typically produced in smaller quantities compared to their bullion and proof counterparts, adding to their exclusivity and desirability among collectors. The combination of limited mintage, unique finish, and the iconic Gold Eagle design make these coins a prized addition to any portfolio.

Burnished Gold Eagle Weights

The Burnished American Gold Eagle was initially produced in four sizes—1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz—from 2006 to 2008, offering collectors and investors a range of options. Each coin is composed of 91.67% fine gold, with small amounts of silver and copper added to enhance durability. After a brief production hiatus in 2009 and 2010, the Burnished Gold Eagle returned in 2011, but exclusively in the 1 oz weight. Since then, the 1 oz Burnished Gold Eagle has been the sole version minted annually, making it a distinctive and valuable option for those seeking a unique addition to their collection or investment portfolio.

Burnished Gold Eagles are often graded by services such as NGC or PCGS. Certified burnished coins are highly valuable and sought after due to their rarity and professionally authenticated condition. They are also IRA-eligible, making them an excellent investment for retirement portfolios.
