The US Mint started the American Eagle Coin Series in 1986, and since then investors have continued to purchase these coins annually to enhance their growing collections. For the 35th anniversary of the program’s inauguration last year, 2021, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. While the reverse designs received a modification, the obverse designs on both coins have remained unaltered.

The obverse for the 2022 Silver American Eagle continues to show the classic Adolph A Weinman design dubbed “Walking Liberty”. This design was an updated rendering of the original illustration used for the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947. Lady Liberty walks forward towards the setting sun with oak and laurel branches in her left arm. She reaches out her right arm out to the horizon with the American flag over her shoulders.

The reverse design by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso displays a fierce bald eagle swooping down for a landing while clutching an oak branch in its talons.
