The US Mint initiated the American Eagle Coin Series in 1986, and since then buyers have continued to purchase each annual release to add to their growing collection. The American Eagle Series gets its name from the reverse designs of the gold, silver, and platinum variations. For the 35th anniversary of the program’s inauguration, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. While the reverse designs received an update, the obverse designs on both coins have remained the same.

The obverse for the 2022 Silver American Eagle bears the classic Adolph A Weinman “Walking Liberty” design, an updated rendering of the original illustration used for the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947. Lady Liberty marches forward to the setting sun with oak and laurel branches in her left arm. She reaches out her right arm towards the horizon with the American flag over her shoulders.

The reverse design by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso features a bald eagle swooping down for a landing while holding an oak branch in its talons.
