Yale as Old as Time
What exactly is a “yale,” anyway? Found in European mythology and heraldry, yales appear in various medieval stories and artwork. Pliny the Elder described the yale as “the size of a hippopotamus” with an elephant tail. Pliny also writes the yale has the jaws of a boar and movable horns. Many writers also compare it to an antelope of ibex. Alternatively known as a “centicore,” the yale represents defense when used in European heraldry. The Yale of Beaufort, specifically, descends to Queen Elizabeth through Henry II. Furthermore, Henry inherited this symbol from his mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, the matriarch of the Tudor dynasty.
The Yale additionally appears as a sculptural decoration on Cambridge’s Christ’s College and St John’s College to commemorate Lady Margaret’s patronage to higher education. This symbol then became synonymous with higher education. Yale University in Connecticut also continues this tradition by featuring the yale in certain places on campus today.
A Legendary Layout
The obverse of the Yale of Beaufort Coins features the beloved Jody Clark design of Queen Elizabeth II. She faces to the right while wearing her royal crown and jewelry
The reverse, however, contains a very different design by Jody Clark. The Yale of Beaufort, rearing back on its hind legs, presents a fierce image for collectors to enjoy. Additionally, the yale bears a shield containing a portcullis (closing gate) surmounted by a royal crown.
