Breast cancer is one of the most serious diseases plaguing modern-day women. At the time of writing, there are more than 3.1 million women in the United States alone who have had a history with breast cancer. A number that includes both those currently undergoing treatment and those who have finished treatment. The focus on research, promoting awareness, and on providing early screening has led to a decreasing death rate. 89.7% of breast cancer positive diagnosed women survived for five years or more. On average, these rates have fallen by 1.8% each year since 2005. For this reason, a portion of the proceeds of every purchase of this coin goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation out of New York towards funding a cure.

Breast cancer is a disease which hits home for many, with the majority of people that have had a mother, grandmother, sister, or friend diagnosed. The funds that go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation primarily go directly into research. They commit 91 cents from every dollar raised to end this disease and its hold on the women and even the men of America and the world. As of 2017, they have raised more than $500 million dollars. With this in mind, research dedicated money is not limited to American researchers. They fund 275 researchers worldwide, located across six continents, with grants to speed up the breakthroughs and progress being made to tackle breast cancer. The gold edition is available to you in Proof or Brilliant Uncirculated conditions, both of which have a limited mintage of only 50,000. Excitingly, the Proof coins have a pinkish hue, a first for the U.S. Mint. The Silver Dollar versions are available in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated, with a mintage of 400,000. 

A Symbol of Hope

The tiger swallowtail butterfly is one of the most commonly seen butterflies in the United States, particularly on the east coast. In fact, across different cultures, butterflies act as symbols of different things. For its change from caterpillar to winged butterfly, the common thread is always a symbol of transformation. In Mandarin, the word for butterfly also means “70 years”, so they symbolize a long life. The Fancy Shawl Dance in Native American culture was inspired by the flight of butterflies, and they act as a sign of renewal and hope. Yellow butterflies, in particular, are a sign of hope. On this new release, the tiger swallowtail butterfly is seen on both the obverse and reverse. On the obverse it stands in the background with the breast cancer ribbon behind two women, one young and one old, the former raising her fist in a show of strength and determination and the latter clasping her hands to her chest. The reverse shows a close-up and more detailed image of the same butterfly.
