Gold American Buffalo 2020 Coins Herd into Stores
Gold American Buffalos
One of the most popular and desirable gold coins available for collectors, the American Gold Buffalo Coin continues to thrive in the gold market. This beautiful US Mint gold coin is the first legal tender gold coin minted by the US Mint that is composed of 99.99% fine gold. The United States Mint began minting Gold American Buffalo Coins to compete with 24K gold foreign bullion coins that began selling very well. Those competing 24K gold coins include Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins and 2020 1 oz Gold American Buffalo Coins in proof and BU versions.
The Gold Buffalo has a face value of $50 but is worth much more due to its gold content. The value of this pure 24k gold US coin increased significantly over the years due to its popularity and rise in gold prices further impacted by the coronavirus. Many collectors enjoy purchasing graded Certified Gold American Buffalo coins. However, buying these appealing coins in Proof and BU conditions holds a powerful draw for many gold investors as well.
Mintage Makes a Difference
The Proof Gold Buffalos attract coin collectors due to lower mintage numbers than their BU counterparts. In 2016, for example, the US Mint produced 219,500 Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Buffalos, while only minting 21,878 Proof Gold Buffalos. This vast difference in production numbers increases the value of the Proof Buffalo coins, which accounts for the higher premium. Buying one of these valuable Proof Buffalos will greatly benefit your growing portfolio. But, you cannot go wrong purchasing a Brilliant Uncirculated version of the 2020 series.
As of this moment, the US Mint has not released mintage or production numbers for their 2020 Gold American Buffalo coins. However, because of the coronavirus, high demand and limited operations at production facilities might severely limit access to this product. If you have been holding out for this coin, order yours sooner rather than later!
The Design of Gold American Buffalo Coins
The design for the Gold American Buffalo drew inspiration from James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head Nickel design. Fraser, a student of Augustus Saint Gaudens, claims ownership of both the nickel and gold buffalo designs. Saint Gaudens is well-known for his American Eagle design. The image on the obverse depicts a Native American man facing right. He wears feathers in his hair. Fraser claims he drew inspiration from three Indian Chiefs from three different tribes: Big Tree (Seneca), Iron Tail (Lakota), and Two Moons (Cheyenne). The year of mintage and the word “Liberty” also appear on the obverse of the coin. The reverse design features the majestic buffalo, facing left, on a grassy plain. The inscriptions on the reverse include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”. Additionally, the reverse displays the denomination, weight, and purity of the Buffalo gold coin.
