First time ever - Reverse Proof Palladium American Eagle
The 2019-W American Eagle palladium $25 coin is set to release on Sept. 15, 2019. Also, the palladium coin backed by the United States Mint is limited to a mintage of 30,000 coins. For the first time, the 2019 palladium coin has a reverse proof finish, and the mintage is double the number of coins issued in 2018 with the standard Proof finish.
Launch Announcement
The palladium American Eagle coin will have a household order limit of one coin during the first 24 hours of sales. Shortly after the launch, the pricing for the 1-ounce .9995 fine palladium coin will be announced. After, the order limit will be lifted, and the spot price of the metal plus a premium is subject to change.
A Palladium Flashback
In 2017, the United States Mint introduced an American Eagle 1 oz Palladium Bullion Coin. Indeed, a collector version of the palladium proof coin surfaced in 2018. In 2018, the U.S. Mint struck a Proof 2018-W American Eagle Palladium coin. Similar to this year, the coin was limited to 15,000 coins and one coin per household. In the meantime, the 2018-W coin was offered at $1,387.50 per coin and sold out immediately of being placed on sale Sept. 6, 2018.
Coin Design and Finish
A reverse proof finish is the opposite of a standard proof coin. By all means, the standard proof bullion is laser frosted against a proof polished, mirror-like field. On the other hand, the reverse proof coin is frosted and display mirror-like surfaces on selected parts. The 2018 and 2019 Palladium American Eagle coins bear the same designs.
The obverse of this palladium coin design features a high-relief portrait of “Winged Liberty” from the “Mercury Dime.” Coin artist, Adolph A. Weinman designed the obverse. In like manner, the inscriptions are the same as the original coin and inscribed “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “2019,” and Weinman’s initials.
The reverse design highlights a high-relief version of the 1907 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal. Together with, the reverse includes an eagle and a branch which is also designed by Weinman. The inscriptions include "UNITED STATES of AMERICA," "$25," "1 OZ. As well as "Pd" (the chemical symbol for palladium), .9995 FINE," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
