Alexander "Alex" Emmanual Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975) is an American professional baseball player of Major League Baseball (MLB )for the New York Yankees as a third baseman and shortstop. He has played for previous teams such as the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. Renowned for being the most highly touted player and viewed as one of the greats in baseball history. Rodriguez has built quite a career. In his 20 years in the sport, he has accumulated a .299 batting average, with 654 home runs, 1,969 runs batted in (RBI's), and 2,939 hits. Drafted by the Mariners out of high school in the 1993 MLB Draft picks and debuted in his first MLB games the following year at 18 years of age. Rodriguez became the Mariners cornerstone player, becoming the starting shortstop and coming in second in the 1996 AL MVP Award votings. After the 2000 season, he chose to leave via free agency to join the Texas Rangers signing the richest baseball contract in history, 10 years $252 million. He played at a high level for three years, winning his first AL MVP Award in 2003. Before the start of the 2004 season, Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees becoming their third baseman. During his first four seasons in the Yankees, he was named AL MVP. He then opted out of his contract in 2007 and then resigned a new 10 year $275 million contract with the New York Yankees. His career continued with him becoming the youngest player to hit 500 career home runs and 600 home runs, reaching a milestone in 2007 and 2010. Rodriguez won his first championship with the Yankees in 2009, following that year as the career leader in home runs by a player of Hispanic descent. He has admitted to using steroids in an interview with Katie Couric on 60-Minutes due to peer pressures from 2001 to 2003.
