Detailed Information:
Upon its release, the Walking Liberty Half Dollars were warmly welcomed by the public as it was a pleasant change after the long period of seeing the Barber coins in circulation. The extremely artistic design of the coin was a treat to the eyes. It received a lot of praise from the newspapers like The New York Sun, the Boston Herald, a Connecticut newspaper, and Banking; a journal of the American Bankers Association. All of them were praising the new coin.
These Silver Half Dollars were minted at three branches of the US Mint; the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark), Denver Mint (D), and San Francisco Mint (S). The coins minted in the first year, from 1916 contained the mint marks “D” and “S” on the obverse below the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” till mid of 1917, when it was shifted from the obverse to the reverse. It was placed below the mountain pine sapling and it remained there till the end of the series in 1947.
This was the first time the mint mark was placed on the obverse on a regular issue US half dollar coin since 1839. The reason to shift the mint mark to the reverse was that on the obverse it gave an appearance of a die defect rather than look like a mint mark.
Although there are not many rare dates in the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series, many dates are scarce in Mint State conditions. The 1916-S, 1917-S Obverse mintmark, 1919-D, 1921, 1921-D, and 1921-S are some of the rare dates.
The Franklin Half Dollar in 1948 marked the end of the gorgeous Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The great appeal of this US Silver Coin has not just mesmerized the numismatists, but has also been appreciated by non-collectors too. 65 different date and mintmark combinations will complete a set of Walking Liberty Half Dollars.
