The US Mint first struck Gold American Buffalo coins in 2006, to compete with the foreign 24K gold coins. Investors flocked to collect the first 24K gold coin released to the public by the US government. Although it is named the Gold American Buffalo coin, this coin depicts the image of an American Bison, which is commonly referred to as the “American Buffalo” in both the United States and Canada. 

The obverse features the profile of a Native American man, facing right, designed by American sculptor James Earle Fraser. The inscriptions include an “F” for Fraser, the word “LIBERTY” and the year. 

The reverse showcases the American Bison grazing on a grassy field. This design was inspired by the 1,550-pound American Buffalo from the Central Park Zoo in the 1910s. Inscriptions include “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “$50” as well as the weight and purity.
