Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated American Eagles were first produced in 1986, and then the Burnished American Eagle was introduced to the series in 2006. All three types of American Eagle coins remain extremely popular among collectors all over the world. Since 2001, all Proof Silver Eagles, including this 2022-W Proof Silver Eagle, have been produced at the West Point facility and bear the “W” mintmark. Burnished Eagles display the mint mark as well. However, BU Eagles produced at the West Point Mint do not bear the mint mark. Last year, the US Mint celebrated the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle program by updating the reverse design on both the Gold and Silver American Eagles. The obverse of the coin remains the same as all previous Silver American Eagle coins. Adolph A Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” strides forth towards the rising sun on the left side of the coin. Her right arm is outstretched to the sunlight, as she cradles branches in her left. Lady Liberty’s dress billows in the wind and the American flag is draped around her shoulders. “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are both inscribed on the obverse along with the year of issue.

The reverse of the coin features the new reverse image, designed by  Emily Damstra. A bald eagle flies through the air while carrying an oak branch in its talons to use as nest-building material. The eagle is surrounded by inscriptions including the weight, purity, and denomination of the coin.
