Native to the northeast Pacific Ocean, the Sea Otter is one of the smallest marine mammals in the world. These foragers are a keystone species and play a critical role in the kelp forest ecosystems they live in. Although sea otters managed to survive the fur trade that almost ended them, they still face many threats today, including entanglement in fishing gear, food limitations, and oil spills.

The obverse of the coin features the gold-plated effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in front of a black rhodium background. She is surrounded by inscriptions circling the rim of the coin.

Designed by wildlife artist Claude Thivierge, this compelling coin speaks to the duality of all living creatures with its delightful reverse design. Two identical otters, plated in matte black rhodium and shiny gold, embody the Yin and Yang symbol in striking contrast to one another. The artist’s initials appear next to the black rhodium-plated otter.
