The Métis, a group of Indigenous peoples who inhabit Canada's three Prairie Provinces, are known for their vibrant culture of decorative arts that emphasizes the brightly colored floral motif in beadwork and embroidery. Other indigenous peoples, like the Dakota and the Cree, refer to the Métis as the “Flower Beadwork People” because of the widespread use of flower designs in their beadwork and embroidery.

The coin’s obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by inscriptions.

The coin’s reverse showcases an engraved rendering of an original floral beadwork pattern by Métis artist Jennine Krauchi. Krouchi has woven together traditional beading elements to tell the story of the Red River Métis. Michif, the official language of the Métis Nation, is also featured on the coin’s reverse.
