In 1982, the Chinese Gold Panda series was first issued by the People’s Bank of China. The series initially included coins available in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz sizes. Later on, the 5 oz, 12 oz, and 1/20 oz sizes were added. The People’s Bank of China decided to switch their measurements over to the metric system in 2016, releasing 1, 3, 8, 15, and 30 gram coins. Additionally, Proof editions of the Panda coins are struck in 1 kilo, 150 grams, 100 grams, and 50 grams. While collectors certainly appreciate the panda series for its diverse size range, they also eagerly await the annually-updated reverse design as well!

The obverse depicts the Temple of Heaven, a complex of religious buildings located in central Beijing. The year of mintage is inscribed around the rim, along with the Chinese characters for “People’s Republic of China.”

The reverse for the Gold Panda displays the 2022 Panda coin design. Two young pandas play in the snow together. The 40th Anniversary privy mark is shown at the bottom left.
