The Chinese Gold Panda series was first released in 1982 by the People’s Bank of China. Initially including coin sizes of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz, the 5 oz, 12 oz, and 1/20 oz sizes were later added. The People’s Bank of China decided to switch their measurements over to the metric system to compete on the international market in 2016. Subsequently, they released the 1, 3, 8, 15, and 30 gram coins. Proof editions of the Panda coins are also struck in 50 gram, 100 grams, 150 grams, and 1 kilo. Coin collectors seek out the panda series for its many size options, but they also eagerly await the annually-updated reverse design as well!

The obverse shows the Temple of Heaven, a complex of religious buildings located in Beijing, China. The year of mintage is inscribed around the rim, along with the Chinese characters for “People’s Republic of China.”
