Last year, in honor of the 35th anniversary of the program’s inauguration, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. While the reverse designs received an alteration, the obverse designs on both coins have remained unchanged. 

The obverse for the Silver American Eagle still shows the “Walking Liberty” design by Adolph Weinman, an updated rendering of the original illustration used for the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947. Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun while cradling oak and laurel branches in her left arm. She reaches out her right arm to the distant horizon with the American flag draped over her shoulders.

The new reverse design by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso displays a fierce bald eagle swooping down for a landing while clutching an oak branch tightly in its talons.
