Last year, in honor of the 35th anniversary of the program’s inauguration, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. While the reverse designs received an update, the obverse designs on both coins have remained the same.
The obverse for the 2022 Silver American Eagle still spotlights the recognizable Adolph A Weinman “Walking Liberty” design, an updated rendering of the original illustration used for the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947. Lady Liberty walks in the direction of the setting sun while cradling oak and laurel branches in her left arm. She reaches out her right arm towards the horizon with the American flag draped over her shoulders.
The new reverse design by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Artist Michael Gaudioso features a fierce bald eagle swooping down for a landing while clutching an oak branch tightly in its talons.
