The obverse of the Mexican Libertad silver coin features the modern Mexican Coat of Arms in the center of a wheel of the previous Coat of Arms. A golden eagle stands atop a prickly pear cactus, clutching a snake between its beak and talon. The image is seated within a circular border. The top half says "Estados Unidos Mexicanos," and an olive and oak wreath outlines the other half.

The reverse touts an image of the "El Ángel" or Angel of Independence, which was erected in 1910 to honor the centennial of the Mexican War of Independence. Inspired by Nike, the Angel bears a laurel wreath in one hand to symbolize victory. A broken 3-link chain is held in her other hand to depict the three centuries of Spanish rule, which has now come to an end. The background features the Mexican landscape with its two most famous volcanoes: Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
