The Silver American Eagle coin is the official silver coin of the United States. First struck in 1986, the Silver Eagles continue to be in high demand year after year. This year, for the 35th anniversary, the US Mint has announced a redesign of the reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles, for the Bullion, Proof, and Burnished versions. This redesign puts in place brand new security features within the design, including an anti-counterfeit reeded edge with a "gap" variation on the coin.

The obverse of both the original and updated silver eagle portrays Adolph A Weinman’s historic “Walking Liberty.” Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun with oak and laurel branches in her left arm, outstretching her right arm to the horizon. She also has the American flag draped over her shoulders. On the new Silver Eagle, this design has restored elements to more closely resemble the original Walking Liberty design. These modified elements include Weinman's initials, the year of mintage font, as well as minor details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays.

The original reverse features John Mercanti’s design of the national US Coat of Arms. A bald eagle stretches out its wings as it holds a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The eagle grasps a banner reading “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak, and its chest bears a shield showing the US flag. Thirteen stars twinkle above the eagle to symbolize the 13 colonies.

The new reverse design by Emily Damstra depicts a realistic rendering of a majestic bald eagle in mid-flight. Its wings are open wide to prepare for a landing as it grasps an oak branch in its talons.
