The American Eagle bullion coin series began in 1986. The name for this series was chosen because of the famous reverse design. The 1986 original American Eagles design was a reimagining of the silver half dollar from the 1900s. On the reverse of the half dollars was the Great Seal of the US, and its use for American coinage dates back to 1792. The seal signifies strength through peace with its combination of arrows and an olive branch in the Eagle's talons. However, for the 35th anniversary, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles that will release later in 2021. Therefore, the obverse and reverse images of this coin remain the same, making this the last new Silver Eagle coin to ever feature the original John Mercanti reverse. Please note, the platinum and palladium American Eagle coins will not be changed at this time.
The obverse maintains the Adolph A Weinman “Walking Liberty” design. In the picture, Lady Liberty heads toward the setting sun. She carries branches in her left arm and outstretches her right arm to the rising sun. The American flag is draped over her shoulders.
The reverse displays the US National Coat of Arms as designed by John Mercanti. The American Bald Eagle with its wings spread apart holds a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. It also carries a banner from its beak that reads the US motto "E Pluribus Unum", and the shield on its chest is embellished with the US flag. Thirteen stars lie above the eagle to reference the original colonies. Inscriptions regarding the coin's weight, purity, denomination, and country are positioned around the rim.
