Both the BU and Proof Silver Eagles were introduced by the United States Mint in November 1986. To this day, they all carry the same classic illustration on the obverse entitled “Walking Liberty.” This was originally designed by Adolph A. Weinman for the 1916-1947 half dollars. The main difference between both coin editions is that the mintmark only shows up on the proof Silver Eagles. These coins are produced with multiple striking that requires special dies and blanks to obtain its fine and sharp finish. This style has been coveted by collectors internationally through the decades.

The obverse continues to bear the classic “Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman. Weinman. In this image, Lady Liberty wears a long dress and has the American Flag around her shoulders. They billow behind her as she strides towards the rising sun. Her right arm is outstretched as though trying to touch the sunrise. Meanwhile, her left arm bears a bounty of olive and oak branches.

The reverse displays John Mercanti’s rendition of the US national coat of arms. Here, a bald eagle stretches its wings wide and carries a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Its beak holds a banner reading “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. A shield with the US flag is against its chest. 13 stars shine above the eagle’s head to signify the original colonies. The weight, purity, denomination, and country’s name are inscribed around the rim.
