On the obverse is the image of an Indigenous American wearing a feathered headdress. This portrait was originally illustrated by James Earle Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel of 1913-1938. He actually drew inspiration from three different chiefs from the Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons tribes to create this unified image. 

The reverse was also designed by Fraser, which is rumored to be based on the bison known as Black Diamond. He was a popular American Bison in the early 1900s who lived in the Central Park Zoo.
