Extraordinary demand from 2020 through early 2021 led the US Mint to drastically increase production for their Gold and Silver American Eagle coins. However, this new 2021 Silver Eagle honors the end of the original design with several important pieces of US Mint history. Firstly, this heraldic 2021 Type 1 Silver Eagle coin is the first and last 2021 Silver Eagle to bear the iconic John Mercanti reverse design. Secondly, the San Francisco Mint exclusively produced these coins because it was the first mint to strike the American Eagle coins back in 1986. Finally, this Silver Eagle is an “Emergency Production” issue because it was struck during the 2020 world health crisis and also was not manufactured by the West Point Mint. All these factors make the heraldic 2021 Type 1 Silver Eagle coins truly significant releases that are valued for both their silver content and modern history.

The obverse of the heraldic 2021 Type 1 Silver Eagle coin shall remain the same after the 2021 update. This image is the Adolph A. Weinman “Walking Liberty” illustration. Lady Liberty with a Phrygian cap extends her right arm to the sunrise as she proceeds toward the horizon. Cradled in her left arm is a bounty of laurel and oak branches. The US flag around her shoulders gently waves in the soft breeze.

The reverse image displays the John Mercanti-styled US National Seal reportedly for the last time. This reverse design is famous for the heraldic bald eagle bearing arrows in one talon, an olive branch in the other, a US flag shield on its chest, and a banner in its beak that reads “E Pluribus Unum.” Thirteen stars also shine above its head to pay homage to the first states of America.
