To meet consumer demand, the US Mint had to strike multiple versions of the American Silver Eagles throughout 2020 and early 2021. So as collectors get ready for the newly redesigned 2021 Silver Eagle coins, this heraldic 2021 Type 1 Silver Eagle coin edition is a special release that carries several stories! This coin celebrates the retirement of the John Mercanti reverse design. Additionally, the San Francisco Mint struck this coin because it was the first mint to strike the original 1986 Gold and Silver American Eagles. This both honors the history of the American Eagle coins program at this facility and serves as a reminder of the challenges the US Mint had to face regarding the pandemic in 2020. Because of world-health related events, this coin is also an “Emergency Production” issue. Therefore, this 2021 Silver Eagle coin carries multiple stories and will make a great conversation-starter and commemorative piece for your collection.
The obverse of the heraldic 2021 Type 1 Silver Eagle coin continues to bear the Adolph A. Weinman “Walking Liberty” image. Lady Liberty with the Phrygian cap greets the sunrise by extending her right arm as she gracefully strides forth. Her left arm carries a bundle of laurel and oak branches. Around her shoulders, the US flag lightly flaps in the gentle breeze.
The reverse image contains, for the last time on a 2021 Silver Eagle, the John Mercanti edition of the US National seal. This reverse design is famous for the heraldic bald eagle bearing arrows in one talon, an olive branch in the other, a US flag shield on its chest, and a banner in its beak that reads “E Pluribus Unum.” Thirteen stars also shine above its head to pay homage to the first states of America.
