Halo is a military science fiction media franchise created in 2001, and has since become one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. The original trilogy was released by Bungee, an American video game developer, but the franchise is currently managed and developed by 343 Industries, which is also an American video game developer. The Halo franchise centers on an interstellar war in the 26th century, fought between humanity and an alliance of aliens known as The Covenant. Humanity’s last hope lies with a dwindling group of enhanced super soldiers known as Spartans, who were originally created to covertly suppress rebellions in the colonies of newly discovered worlds. The main playable character, Master Chief John-117, is one of the few remaining Spartans left. Together with his artificial intelligence (AI) companion, Cortana, Master Chief and his crew try to protect the Halo Array from being activated by The Flood, an alien parasite released by The Covenant. The Halo Array, a group of megastructures and superweapons, possesses the ability to kill all nearby sentient life in the galaxy - only to be used as a last resort against The Flood.

The recognizable character of Master Chief has appeared in Halo books and graphic novels – including Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: The Flood, Halo: First Strike, and Halo: Uprising – as well as in other Halo media.
