Of all the US Mint’s pre-1965 silver coins, the Morgan Silver Dollars remain one of the most lauded of all time. The Morgan Silver Dollars carry an abundance of US history from the Comstock Lode discovery to playing a key role to support the war effort of WWI. This silver dollar was designed by the US Mint engraver George T. Morgan. The coins were manufactured in 1878-1904, and once again in 1921. This gap in production owes to the Pittman Act. This act allowed the US to melt a set amount of silver dollars and sell that silver to help Great Britain during WWI. Therefore, reportedly half the entire mintage of the coins was lost. They were supposed to be replaced in 1921 by the Peace Silver Dollar, but the design of the new silver dollar was not yet ready. Therefore, the Morgan Silver Dollars were restruck that year until December. This 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar commemorates the transition from the Morgan Silver Dollar to the Peace Silver Dollar, and continues to display the George T Morgan design.
The obverse displays Lady Liberty wearing the Liberty cap adorned with wheat and cotton blossoms.
The reverse contains a rendition of the US Seal in use in 1921. This seal consists of a bald eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A wreath surrounds this central image.
