Dating back to ancient times, the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom has now come to symbolize authority and military might. The British Coat of Arms underwent various changes throughout the years, as it was utilized by each new ruling British Monarch as they ascended to the throne. First appearing on the currency in the 14th century the royal coat of arms shown on this coin is now used by Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II.

The obverse of the coin showcases the royal right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. The Queen is wearing her royal crown and elegant jewelry.

The reverse, designed by Timothy Noad, features the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom. A lion and unicorn are shown leaping out from behind a shield, which bears the crest representing the nations of the United Kingdom. The rampant lion represents Scotland, the harp represents Ireland, and the three lions represent England. Inscribed underneath the lion and unicorn is the phrase ‘DIEU ET MON DROIT’ (‘God and my right’) and ‘HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE’ (‘shame upon him who thinks evil upon it’) is inscribed upon the shield. The background is filled with a radial line design which enhances the overall aesthetic.
