The Music Legends series began in 2020 with the release of the Queen coin, followed by the Elton John coin. Sir Elton Hercules John was originally born as Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947. Although he had humble beginnings as a teenager playing piano in a pub from Thursday to Sunday nights, Elton John’s fame skyrocketed in 1970 with his first hit single “Your Song,” which topped charts in both the UK and the US. He has sold over 300 million records over the course of his career, securing him as one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His most popular songs include “Rocket Man”, “Bennie and the Jets”, “I’m Still Standing”, “Tiny Dancer”, and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” A major champion for the LGBT movement, Elton John is a highly respected musician and philanthropist. He was close friends with Freddie Mercury of Queen, and after losing Mercury and another friend to HIV complications, he created the Elton John AIDS Foundation. He has performed at numerous royal events, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 for his “services to music and charitable services.” John has also received the Legion of Honour, France’s highest civilian award in 2019. 

The obverse of the coin displays the famous Jody Clark portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with her royal crown and earrings. She is surrounded by inscriptions making note of the coin’s denomination and an engraving of her name.

The reverse of this coin is emblazoned with Elton John’s name and a creative logo. The logo consists of Elton John’s famous flat-topped boater hat, striped bowtie, and two connected sixteenth—or semiquaver—notes that serve as a pair of eyeglasses. The Union Jack serves as a background to the logo, surrounded by a border that repeats the coin’s denomination, purity, and year.
