This new series begins with its first coin that spotlights one of the world’s best-selling music artists, Queen. This band debuted in 1970 in London with members Freddie Mercury (singer & pianist), Brian May (guitarist), John Deacon (guitar), and Roger Meddow Taylor (bass drum). Queen’s music was the hard rock that mixed with pop music styles, this combination led them to single-handedly revolutionize the genre. Their first internationally successful album was their fourth album, A Night at the Opera, in 1975. Bohemian Rhapsody was the featured song of this album, which their producer doubted would succeed. Later on, Queen’s best hits compilation album became the top-selling album in the UK, and it still remains so to this day. This album was also certified platinum eight times in the US. Their renowned performance at Live Aid secured their history in the music world where they performed songs such as Radio Gaga, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, We Are the Champions, and more. Sadly, Mercury passed away in 1994 from complications from AIDs. Although Mercury’s loss left a profound mark on the music world, Queen continues today with Adam Lambert as their lead singer.

The obverse of the coin displays the famous Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with her royal crown and earrings. She is surrounded by inscriptions with the coin’s denomination and an engraving of her name.

The reverse of this coin is the first design by the Royal Mint’s Chris Facey which was approved by Roger Taylor and Brian May. This design showcases the title “Queen” in its classic font emblazoned on its albums. Surrounding this inscription are instruments meant to represent the four founder members of the band: Freddie Mercury’s piano, Brian May’s guitar, John Deacon’s bass guitar, Roger Taylor’s drum with a swan stand along with a microphone. The opening notes of Bohemian Rhapsody are pressed down on the piano.
