Canada remains known for its bush planes that are able to land roughly and take off in the wilderness. In the 1930s, the country had also created British-designed planes to support the war effort, but Canada’s ambition did not diminish after the war ended. A decade after the official end of the war, the Avro CF-105 Arrow became the most advanced military intercepter design of the 1950s. The plane was slightly longer and wider than today's Eurofighter Typhoon, and the jet could fly close to Mach 2.0.  Although the project was scrapped in 1959, its legacy continues to inspire admiration and awe. The supersonic jet gave Canada the reputation as a leader in aviation engineering in that decade. The design of the five-ounce silver coin showcases the powerful legacy of this invention. 

The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt.

The reverse displays the Avro CF-105 Arrow in mid-flight highlighted in gold plating. Beneath the jet is a maple leaf in the shape of its shadow.
