Native to North America and Eurasia, the Grey Wolf is currently the largest living member of the Canidae family. Interestingly, Canada is home to the second-biggest wolf population in the world (after Russia). These social canines travel in packs made up of several smaller groups resembling a nuclear family, as wolves are monogamous creatures and raise their young together. While wolves have been treated with suspicion and maligned as villains in children’s stories for centuries, they provide an essential service to their ecosystem and help maintain the balance of flora and fauna. Throughout the years, wolves have been both feared and revered — often appearing in art, literature, film, and television. Some wolves recently shown in a more positive light include the heroic wolf-dog Balto from the 1995 animated film, and the Direwolves in Game of Thrones, serving as loyal companions to the members of House Stark. Looks like the “lone wolf” has met its match — Fetch this 1 oz Grey Wolf Coin for your growing precious metals pack!

The obverse of the coin features the gold-plated effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in front of a black rhodium background. She is surrounded by inscriptions circling the rim of the coin.

Designed by wildlife artist Claude Thivierge, this compelling coin speaks to the duality of all living creatures with its delightful reverse design. Two identical wolves, plated in matte black rhodium and shiny gold, embody the Yin and Yang symbol in strike contrast to one another. The artist’s initials appear next to the black rhodium-plated wolf.
