The design of this gold lunar coin stems from the Chinese proverb “The carp has leaped over the dragon gate.” What this means is “triumph over adversity.” According to legend, carp swim upstream and some brave ones try to jump the Dragon Gate. This gate is at the top of a mythical waterfall. If a carp successfully made the leap over the gate after swimming up the dangerous waterfall, it was transformed into a powerful dragon. Hence, the image of a dragon-headed carp in mid-transformation on the reverse of the coin. This valuable Canadian coin was struck for the Chinese New Year. Dragons are especially lucky as auspicious symbols in China, and the specific mintage of 8,888 is superstitiously believed to invite significant wealth. 

The obverse of this gold lunar coin portrays the classic Susanna Blunt depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty, the Queen gazes to the right of the coin, showing off her royal earrings and necklace. Inscriptions border the portrait including her name, the face value, and the Latin phrase “D.G. The reverse of the Canadian gold dragon coin is embellished with a remarkably intricate image of a carp turning into a Chinese dragon.
