Established in 1986, the American Silver Eagle coin program is the first official bullion coin of the United States since the overturning of Executive Order 6102. This order was established by FDR during the Great Depression, and it forbid the ‘hoarding of gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates' in order to help the US economy regrow. Every year, the Silver Eagle coins are subject to high demand. This year, for the 35th anniversary, the US Mint announced a redesign of the reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagle coins. The new reverse for both displays the American Bald Eagle in more natural depictions than previously. You can see an American Eagle in mid-flight on the 2021 Silver Eagle. The US Mint also added new security features to the coin, including an anti-counterfeit reeded edge. This security feature appears like a “gap” variation in the coin’s edge.

The obverse bears a refreshed Adolph A Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” illustration originally used on the 1916-1947 silver half-dollar. Elements that have returned to the coin’s obverse are Weinman's initials, the year of mintage font, as well as minor details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays. Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun while carrying oak and laurel branches and reaching out to the horizon. The American flag draped over her shoulders and her dress billow gently.

The new reverse design of the Type 2 Silver Eagles showcases the American bald eagle in flight with an oak branch in its talons. Inscriptions that surround the eagle note the country, weight, purity, denomination, and US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
