This bullion coin series began in 1986 and collectors have annually kept up with the releases to create a complete John Mercanti collection. This series found its name because of the illustration on the reverse. The original 1986 design was an updated image inspired by the 1792 coin used on all the American Eagle coins in silver and gold. On the reverse of the Silver Eagle is the Great Seal of the US, which has been used on American coinage since 1792. The seal signifies strength through peace. However, for the 35th anniversary, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. Only the reverses are being changed, and the obverses for both will remain the same. This final edition will not contain the new design, making it the last American Silver Eagle to ever carry the original reverse design.
The obverse for the 2021 Silver American Eagle bears the classic Adolph A Weinman design “Walking Liberty.” This was found on the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947 and was reimagined for this coin. Lady Liberty marches forward to the setting sun with oak and laurel branches in her left arm. She outstretches her right arm to the horizon with the American flag over her shoulders.
The reverse continues to display the US Seal of the heraldic Bald Eagle as designed by John Mercanti. Here, a bald eagle poses behind a striped shield as 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies form a triangle over its head. It holds olive branches and arrows in its talons and grasps a banner reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak.
