The Royal Canadian Mint’s Maple Leaf coins come in silver, gold, platinum, and palladium. The first Canadian Maple Leaf coin was released in 1979 in gold. Since 1988, the Canadian Maple Leaf coins have annually been struck in both silver and platinum. However, the Platinum Maple Leaf coin program that included multiple sizes was temporarily halted in 2002. This program resumed in 2009 with only the 1 oz coin size. Also beginning in 2009, the obverse featured a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth. This continues to be the obverse design today.
The obverse of the Platinum Maple Leaf coins contains the Susanna Blunt 2003 portrait of the Queen wearing her elegant earrings and necklace. She is surrounded by an inscription of her name, the face value of the coin, and the year of issue.
The reverse of the Platinum Maple Leaf features the original Walter Ott illustration of a sugar maple leaf. Inscriptions include “CANADA”, the weight and purity of the coin, and a much smaller, micro-engraved textured maple leaf as an additional security feature.
