The obverse of the coin displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by artist Jody Clark. The 12 lunar animals of the Chinese Zodiac surround the Queen’s bust in a circle around the coin’s rim. Inscriptions include The Queen’s name, “AUSTRALIA”, the coin’s denomination, and the year of mintage.

The reverse features a bull standing beneath willow branches, designed by Bronwyn King. Inscriptions include “YEAR OF THE OX” and the weight and purity of the coin.
