The 2020 US Proof Set release is the first of three 2020 annual sets produced by the US Mint. The US Mint was inspired by the success of the 2019-W Lincoln Penny, so each of the three 2020 sets will have a 2020-W Jefferson Nickel as a special edition. This year, for the first time ever, the Jefferson Nickel was produced at the US Mint’s West Point Facility. The coin has a proof finish and showcases the “W” mintmark. This nickel was graded by NGC as PF 69 with the Early Release designation. This coin also comes with a special label bearing the portrait of Thomas Jefferson. This 2020 edition proof set includes two clear cases in one box that shows off the Washington Monument in the twilight. The first case houses five coins from the America the Beautiful Program, and the second case has five common denomination coins.

The 2020-W Jefferson Nickel has a proof finish with sharp relief and a mirror-like background behind the frosted foreground. The obverse of the Jefferson Nickel displays the portrait of Thomas Jefferson with inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “Liberty”, “2020”, and the “W” mint mark from West Point.

The reverse of the nickel is the “Return to Monticello” design of Jefferson’s Monticello house. Inscriptions include “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “MONTICELLO”, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, as well as the denomination.
