Springfield, MA is credited as the birthplace of basketball with resident James Naismith as its creator. To honor this century-old sport, the Naismith Hall of Fame was established in the same town in 1959 and now celebrates 60 years of operation. This Hall of Fame not only serves to preserve basketball history or honor current elites. It also is a nonprofit, independent organization that seeks to increase access to the game of basketball for beginners and professionals internationally. It maintains over seventy high school and collegiate competitions. This is in addition to hosting the annual Enshrinement Ceremony to honor professional players, coaches, benefactors, and more.
This gold coin arrives with a special edition label from the partnership with the Hall of Fame and PCGS. These labels will have a special pedigree to celebrate this year with basketball-related coins and programs. Its design features a basketball with diagonal text overlaying the ball to create an illusion that the ball is moving toward you. All special labels from PCGS are eventually retired, adding to its collectibility. Purchase yours today before they sell out!
The obverse design of this coin is by the public competition winner Justin Kunz from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). Kunz’s design sought to spotlight the diversity of the athletes for basketball. He also set out to capture the endurance this sport demands and did so by having three players reach for a basketball high above their heads. Additionally, Kunz added a subtle basketball hoop design in the background and border of the coin. This feature paired with the players hints they could be about to score.
AIP artist Donna Weaver designed the reverse with a basketball about to fall through the hoop. The inscriptions on this side note coin’s face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
