James Naismith is the founder of basketball from Springfield, MA from over a century ago. In 1959, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame began operations in the same hometown to honor the game and Naismith. This Hall has over 400 inductees from its sixty-year history. It operates as a nonprofit, independent organization that strives to honor and promote basketball. They support from beginner levels to pro, and it conducts tournaments and programs internationally. The hall is best known for its annual Enshrinement Ceremony that honors the elites, which includes players, coaches, and supporters.
Taking inspiration from the design of the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame coins, this coin arrives in the same dome-shape that collectors previously praised. The obverse illustration was created by Justin Kunz, who won the public competition for the design. He is from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP), and his design showcases the diversity of the players and the demanding nature of the sport. Three players reach for the basketball high above their heads to demonstrate the necessary endurance for this game. Additionally, the background of the coin features a net. Kunz coupled this with the rim of the border to foreshadow a successful score by the players.
AIP artist Donna Weaver designed the reverse that demonstrates a basketball about to fall into a hoop. Inscriptions are featured on the coin noting the face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
