Established in 1959, Springfield, MA, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is an independent, nonprofit organization named in honor of the creator of basketball. James Naismith is the first basketball coach who began this game at the end of the 1800s. The Hall of Fame has been operating for 60 years, has over 400 inductees, and conducts about 70 high school and collegiate level basketball competitions internationally. The mission to spread access to the game of basketball internationally fuels them as they honor the game.

Justin Kunz from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) won the public competition for the design of the obverse. This coin capitalizes on the diversity of basketball players and the intensity of the game. Three different players reach for the basketball soaring overhead. When paired with the basketball net and rim background, this coin suggests the players are about to score.

The reverse design is by AIP artist Donna Weaver. The basketball in this illustration is about to fall into the hoop. Inscriptions are featured on the coin identifying the face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
