The Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame was established as an independent, nonprofit organization to promote, celebrate, and maintain the game of basketball around the world. It is so named in honor of the founder of basketball from the late 1800s, James Naismith, the first-ever basketball coach. Located in the hometown of basketball in Springfield, MA, this nonprofit celebrates its 60th Anniversary of operations. The Hall is widely known for its annual Enshrinement Ceremony, but it also conducts competitions for the high school and collegiate levels internationally.

This coin’s design was chosen from a public competition with AIP artist Justin Kunz as the winner. The obverse of this coin demonstrates the diversity of the athletes who play basketball, and the demanding nature of the sport itself. All three players on this coin stretch for a basketball soaring overhead. When coupled with the basketball hoop design of the background and border, the design suggests the players are about to score.

AIP artist Donna Weaver designed the reverse. This illustration shows a basketball about to fall into a hoop. Inscriptions are featured on the coin with information on the face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
